Nine years ago, and Josephâs dad and step-mam had gone to some wedding so heâd thrown a party. She and Ryan were both fifteen, him only just. They were shifting on the couch, her on his lap, their eyes closed, and his mouth had slowed to the extent that she thought she might actually burst. He whispered, âWill you go upstairs with me?â
Her blood rushed under her skin; she was hot, almost headachy; she enjoyed a series of revelations; so this was what it meant to badly want someone. They took a suit bag and two shoe boxes off the bed in the box room and lay down in the dark. He was contradictory. His tongue was unhurried but the rest of him was almost shaking, like if she pressed down hard sheâd set his muscles fitting.
Things progressed to the point where the hem of her dress was pushed up past her bum; his hand was in her knickers; his jeans were undone; it could definitely happen now; it probably would happen now, only for the wetness at the tip of his penis and the thoughts that pushed into her head. Pre-cum. Sperm. Pregnancy. She said, âNot here,â and pushed on his shoulders.
And the thing was that saying âNot hereâ implied Yes, but somewhere else. Some other time, soon. That the only issue was the location. He protested softly. He stayed over loads at Josephâs so this was practically his bedroom. No one would come in.
Only it was too late. Not here. Not in the dark with their clothes half hanging off and a party throbbing downstairs. The stipulations were in place, and it was irrefutably in motion.
Two days later they went on the hop from school and had sex in his bed and when she looked back on it, it was sweet and kind of perfect and she wished sheâd known immediately â as they lay under the thin duvet hardly able to make eye contact, so amazed they were at one another â that he wasnât just using her, that he was hopelessly in love.
